I stayed out the Scandal game for a minute. I was less than impressed by the first few episodes of Season 1, so stayed my ass on shore when all of Black Twitter/the world at large hopped on the Gladiator boat. But KS and other key influences in my life have been telling me to reconsider this life choice, so recently I binge-watched the whole thing in preparation for this week’s premiere.

I’m still not calling myself a #gladiator or even a stan, but let me tell you…that scene between Liv and her dad this week? I was almost cryin, man. “You have to be twice as good to get half as far” was among the most oft-repeated messages of my childhood. Right up there with the idea that the outside world as an entity didn’t give two shits about me.

…My stepfather was not the kindest with his advice.

But I’m proud of the way Scandal does come out and address Liv’s race from time to time, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen the Black tax talked about on prime time television that way before, so major props all around.
